Introduction:

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Exam all across India every year. Nearly a thousand candidates are selected after a three stage examination, considered to be one of the toughest in India. The selected candidates are deputed to serve in various wings of the administration in Central and State Governments.

Who are eligible to appear for the Civils Services Exam?

Aspirants must be 21 years of age, and should have completed their graduation

What is the format of the Civil Services Exam?

The UPSC conducts Civil Services Exam every year. It has three stages: Preliminary Examination (General Studies and General Aptitude), Mains, and interview. To qualify, aspirants have to pass all the three stages of the examination in the same recruitment year.

PLAN OF THE EXAMINATION:

The competitive examinations comprises to successive stages:

Stage – I Prelims: (Objective)

  • Civils Services (Preliminary) Examinations (Objective Type) for the selection of candidates for Main Examination.
  • The Prelims examination will consists of two papers of objective type (Multiple choice question). This Examination is meant to serve as a screening test only; the marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.

Note 1: The commission will draw a list of candidates to be qualified for Civil Service (main) Examination based on the total qualifying marks as may be determined by the Commission, of the two papers put together.

Note 2: There will be negative marking for incorrect answers. (as detailed below)

  • There are four alternatives for the answers to every question. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.
  • If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happens to be correct. There will be same penalty as above for that question.
  • If a question is left blank, i.e. no answer is given by the candidate; there will be no penalty for that question.

SYLLABI FOR THE EXAMINATION

PART-A-PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

The Examination shall comprise of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each.

  • Both question papers will be of the objective type
  • Each paper will be of two hours duration

Paper I - (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

  • Current events of national and international importance.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization.
  • General Science.

Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability;
  • Decision-making and problem-solving;
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
  • English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).

Note 1: Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper II) will be tested through passages from English language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.

Note 2: The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.

Note 3: It is mandatory of candidate to appear in the both the papers in the Civil services (Prelim Examination) for the purpose of evaluation.

PART-B-MAIN EXAMINATION

The main Examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates than merely the range of their information and memory.

The nature and standard of questions in the General Studies papers (Paper II to Paper V) will be such that a well-educated person will be able to answer them without any specialized study. The questions will be such as to test a candidate's general awareness of a variety of subjects, which will have relevance for a career in Civil Services. The questions are likely to test the candidate's basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyze, and take a view on conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives and demands. The candidates must give relevant, meaningful and succinct answers.

The scope of the syllabus for optional subject papers (Paper VI and Paper VII) for the examination is broadly of the honors’ degree level i.e. a level higher than the bachelors' Degree and lower than the masters' degree.

In the case of Engineering, Medical Science and law, the level corresponds to the bachelors' degree.

Qualifying Papers on Indian languages and English

The aim of the paper is to test the candidate ability to read and understand serious discursive prose and to express his ideas clearly & correctly in English and Indian language concerned.

The pattern of questions will be broadly as follows:

  1. Comprehension of given passage
  2. Précis writing
  3. Usage and Vocabulary
  4. Short Essay

  5. Translation from English to Indian Languages and vice-versa.

Note 1: The papers on Indian Languages and English will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature only. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking.

Note 2: The candidates will have to answer the English and Indian Languages papers in English and the respective Indian Languages (Except where translation is involved)

PAPER-I

Essay: Candidates will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.

Questions may utilise the case study approach to determine these aspects.)

== Contributions of moral thinkers and philosophers from India and world.

  • The question papers for the examination will be of conventional (essay) type.
  • Each paper will be three hours duration.
  • State Bank of India (SBI) is an Indian multinational, public sector banking and financial services company. It is a government-owned corporation with its headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Every year it conducts examinations for the post of PO and Clerk.
  • It provides the best salary and privileges to its employee.
  • Though the bank pay scale does not follow CPC yet it is providing best packages in the government sectors.
  • The salary of its employees may reach to Rs. 60,000 in the beginning.
Recruitment:

Approximately every year the SBI releases vacancies for the post of clerk, PO and SO. It is one of the most awaited exams in the opinion of the aspirants. If your dream is to work with the SBI, stay with us and prepare for the exam.

Exam Pattern:
Phase-I : Preliminary Examination:

Preliminary Examination consisting of Objective Tests for 100 marks will be

conducted online. This test would be of 1 hour duration consisting of 3 Sections as follows:

Candidates have to qualify in each of the three tests by securing passing marks to be decided by the Bank. Adequate number of candidates in each category as decided by the Bank (approximately 20 times the numbers of vacancies subject to availability) will be short listed for the Main Examination.

Phase – II: Main Examination:

Main Examination will consist of Objective Tests for 200 marks and Descriptive Test for 50 marks. Both the Objective and Descriptive Tests will be online. Candidates will have to answer Descriptive test by typing on the computer. Immediately after completion of Objective Test, Descriptive Test will be administered.

Objective Test

The objective test of 3 hours duration consist of 4 Sections for total 200 marks. The objectivetest will have separate timing for every section. The candidates are required to qualify in each of the Tests by securing passing marks, to be decided by the Bank.

Descriptive Test:

The Descriptive Test of 30 minutes duration with 50 marks will be a Test of EnglishLanguage (Letter Writing & Essay). The candidates are required to qualify in the Descriptive Test by securing passing marks, to be decided by the Bank.

Descriptive Test paper of only those candidates will be evaluated who have scored qualifying marks in the Objective Tests and are placed adequately high as per total marks in objective test.

Penalty for Wrong Answers (Applicable to both – Preliminary and Main examination)

There will be penalty for wrong answers marked in the Objective Tests. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate one fourth of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty to arrive at corrected score. If a question is left blank, i.e. no answer is marked by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.

Phase – III: Group Exercises (20 marks) & Interview (30 marks)

The aggregate marks of candidates qualifying in both the Objective Tests and Descriptive Test will be arranged in descending order in each category. Adequate number of candidates in each category, as decided by the Bank will be called for Group Exercises and Interview. The qualifying marks in Group Exercises &Interview will be as decided by the Bank.

Candidates qualifying for Group Exercises & Interview under 'OBC' category would be required to submit OBC certificate containing the 'Non Creamy layer' clause. Candidates not submitting the OBC certificate containing the 'Non Creamy layer' clause and requesting to be interviewed under General category will not be entertained.

Final Selection

The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination (Phase-I) will not be added for the selection and only the marks obtained in Main Examination (Phase-II), both in Objective Test and Descriptive Test, will be added to the marks obtained in GE & Interview (Phase-III) for preparation of the final merit list.

The candidates will have to qualify both in Phase-II and Phase-III separately. Marks secured by the candidates in the Written Test (out of 250 marks) are converted to out of 75 and marks secured in Group Exercises & Interview (out of 50 marks) are converted to out of 25. The final merit list is arrived at after aggregating converted marks of Written Test and Group Exercises &Interview out of 100 for each category. The selection will be made from the top merit ranked candidates in each category.

Results of the candidates who have qualified for Group Exercises & Interview and the list of candidates finally selected will be made available on the Bank's website. Final select list will be published in Employment News/ RozgarSamachar and also in Bank’s website.
